"GOLDEN
VIVILI SHELL"
Vivili
is the Fijian word for a whelk which is prized for it's delicately
flavoured meat. My children aren't that keen on the traditional
vivili in coconut cream dishes that their grandmother cooks, but
they love playing with the heaps of smooth, strong shells that can
be found near a beach side village!
Size:
18 x 14.5 cm

"GOLDEN
SCALLOP"
Like
the other paintings in our "Golden Shell" range, this
scallop shell comes with either a cream (natural) barkcloth background,
or on dyed, golden-brown
piece of barkcloth like the one shown here. Details in metalic paint.

18 x 14.5 cm

"GOLDEN
VENUS COMB"
A
shell with a poetic name like this just asks to be painted! I found
my first
Venus Comb while wandering along my favourite beach, Sovi Bay, on
Fiji's Coral Coast. Beautifully intact, it sits on my studio shelf,
providing inspiration for several different paintings, this one
included!
Size:
18 x 14.5 cm

"SILVER
WENTLETRAP"
The
name of this shell comes from the German word wendeltreppe meaning spiral
staircase!
The beauty of this striking shell is captured in silvery blues on white
masi.
Size:
38 x 25 cm

"SILVER
SCORPIO CONCH"
The
sort of shell that invites you to hold it to your ear, listening for mysterious
secrets that may have been washed up from the deep
Hand-painted in silvers and blues on masi, or barkcloth, made by women
from the small island village where my husband's mother grew up.

"SILVER
NAUTILUS II"
I've
returned to the serene beauty of my favourite of all shells, the nautilus,
for inspiration for the third and final in this "Silver Shell"
series. Each painting in the series is done by hand, using a sponging
technique like that which Fijian women use when decorating swathes of
traditional barkcloth for cultural ceremonies. While the village women
use clay mixed with sap to make their paint, I use a water-based medium
which enables me to work in bright, contemporary colours!
