CONTEMPORARY SILK ART FROM OCEANIA

"PASIFIKA III ~ IGUANA"
53 x 53 cm (unframed)
PRICE CATEGORY: S

As with all the paintings shown on this page,
"Pasifika III" is painted on pure white silk using dyes,
and metallic gold resist for the lines.
The theme of this painting centers around
the mystery of Fiji's native iguanas.
With their closest relatives being found
in the jungles of South America,
the arrival oF Fiji's two species, the Crested and Banded Iguanas,
on the shores of these tiny Pacific Island is a puzzle that has intrigued zoologists for some time.
Could they, or their eggs, have floated across the Pacific
on rafts of vegetation?

"PASIFIKA VII ~ KURO NI VITI"
dye on silk, gold resist lines
53 x 53 cm (unframed)
PRICE CATEGORY: S

This is the painting that won the prize for
BEST CONTEMPORARY ARTWORK
at the Western Arts & Crafts Society "ART 2001" Exhibition
held in Nadi last November.
The painting features clay pots made by friends of mine
who live beside the Rewa River north of Suva.
These women make a living from pot-making
much as their mothers and great-grandmothers did.
Traditional Fijian pottery is produced using a combination
of pinching and slabbing techniques.
The dried pots are fired in an open fire of mangrove wood,
with the resulting pots ranging in colour
from terracotta red to deep charcoal black.

"PASIFIKA V ~ REEF HERON"

dye on silk, gold resist lines
53 x 53 cm (unframed)
PRICE CATEGORY: S

The reef heron is a familiar sight along Fiji's tidal mudflats.
The species that makes Fiji its home
has two different colour phases: white and blue-grey.
White herons are a less common sight,
and it was the thrill of seeing one standing absolutely still
amongst the arching stilt roots
of a mangrove thicket
that inspired this painting.

"PASIFIKA II ~ WITH LOBSTER CLAW"
dye on silk, gold resist lines
53 x 53 cm (unframed)

A painting that incorporates
the colors and rhythms of a hot Pacific afternoon!
"Pasifika II" features a sprig of Hanging Heliconia,
or 'Flowering Lobster Claw"
as this plant is more commonly known.
